Shoppers still flocking to stores

We cannot follow everyone to make sure they are not lying.

LYDENBURG – Residents are still not abiding by all the regulations of the lockdown.

On Monday residents were still flocking to supermarkets, taking strolls in the street and jogging along the roadside.
Although supermarkets are doing their best to implement strict hygiene measures, children were still seen playing outside stores.

A manager at one of the supermarkets told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they have not seen a decline in shoppers, despite the lockdown.

“We only allow a maximum of 100 shoppers in-store. However, I still need to take into account the safety and wellbeing of my staff. We have been scolded and cursed at. If only people would realise it is for their safety.”

The newspaper met Col Samson Sibiya of Lydenburg SAPS in the same store. Sibiya said that residents are under the impression that the SAPS is not doing enough to keep residents at bay.

“If they inform us that they are on the road to buy essential goods, what are we supposed to do? We cannot follow everyone to make sure they are not lying,” he said.

He also indicated that SAPS is foreseeing a problem and an increase in movement on Wednesday when child grants will be paid out.
