Child Welfare SA Nelspruit calls on Lowvelders to support the cause

MBOMBELA – The global Covid-19 pandemic lockdown and its consequent restrictions on the movement of South Africans, has had an overwhelmingly negative impact on the lives and livelihoods of many citizens.

In the Lowveld, the most vulnerable are orphaned children in the care of organisations such as Child Welfare SA Nelspruit.

The institution relies heavily on funding from generous donors within the community. As a result of the lockdown, its annual fundraisers could not be held this year.

For this reason, committee members came up with a crowdfunding idea to raise enough money to cover its operational costs.

Temie Biyela, who is an administrator at the centre in Ehmke Street, said, “We are hoping to raise R105 000 by September 4. These funds will help with our monthly operational costs which enable us to continue our mission of keeping the children in our community safe”.

According to Biyela, the team, through the support of the Lowveld community, has raised R19 722 in just one week, which she added, showed that Lowvelders really do care about this vulnerable group.

“Both events bring in a combined income of R300 000. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the events had to be cancelled,” said Biyela.

She added that, though it is partly funded by the Department of Social Development, the Mbombela branch is dependent on the Lowveld community’s kindness which keeps it afloat.

“The funds raised will be used to cover our utility bills, Internet and telephone usage and our fuel costs as well as office supplies. Donations can be made by clicking on this link: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/ncws-fundraiser, and following the instructions.”

For those big-hearted individuals who would like to do more, the organisation is in need of food parcels, baby clothes, formula, nappies, blankets and toys for the children. These can be dropped off at 10 Ehmke Street in Mbombela.

Biyela concluded, “Please follow us on our Facebook page: Child Welfare SA Nelspruit, or drop us an email on childwelfarenel@mweb.co.za. Alternatively, potential donors can call us on 013-753-3330, or use our WhatsApp number 079-368-6540.”
