Five SA towns that ooze authenticity

Sometimes we need to venture off the beaten track to find places that make our souls sing.

With its majestic mountains and coast and its laidback yet vibey feel, famous Cape Town draws multitudes of visitors each year. Yet across the length and breadth of our beautiful country are a plethora of other towns, villages and cities with their own special magic.

We asked photojournalist and travel writer Melanie van Zyl to tell us which five South African towns top the list of her favourite places to visit, and why.

Some of Mel’s proudest work includes tripping over elephants on a wild journey through the Zambezi region to uncover community conservation collaborations at work, learning about Luanda and Angola’s tourism potential from its youngest minister, and exploring Mauritius’ foodie backstreets. Close enough to Cape Town and the wonders of the Cape Winelands, but at the cusp of the Little Karoo, Montagu is a great exploration base. You’ll be spoilt for accommodation options, hiking trails, affordable restaurants and glorious mountain views.

St Lucia

Encircled by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, this tropical outpost is never short of exciting happenings. Hippos roam the streets, there’s both beach and bush on its doorstep, and activities for the whole family. Snorkel in the morning, game drive in the afternoon, and wind down the day with a restaurant pizza.

Tucked between the Limpopo Lowveld and the great north highway, this village is more a forest sanctuary than a town. Meander your weekend away by exploring backroad breweries and vivid gardens come spring, or adventure along the country’s most beautiful canopy tour above the Letaba River.

Rosendal

This is the quieter, more idyllic, rural equivalent to popular Clarens. Forty-three kilometres north of Ficksburg, this little farming town is best for those seeking serious downtime. Located on the edge of the Witteberge, it is picturesque and charming.

Dine on Karoo-reared lamb, brush up on your local history, walk the pedestrian-friendly streets, and do some stargazing. This handsome town has it all… art, culture, history, plus a national park on its doorstep.
