Rain expected in the Lowveld over the next few days

The chance of rain will improve during the course of the week, reaching a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers over the weekend.

Rain and thundershowers can possibly be expected in the Lowveld region over the next few days.

Vanetia Phakula, a forecaster at the South African Weather Service, said there was a 30% chance for showers and thundershowers in the Ehlanzeni District on Wednesday afternoon. The chances of rain will likely expand into Thursday and Friday, with a 30% chance of rain expected on both days.

On the weekend, the chance of rain is expected to increase, with a chance of 60% for showers and thunder showers on both Saturday and Sunday.

According to Phakula, the possibility of rain will also cool down temperatures in the area. The Lowveld will still be hot on Tuesday, after which it will be cooler on Wednesday, ranging between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, there will be a significant drop in temperatures, ranging between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are likely to increase on Friday and Saturday, but decrease again on Sunday to Monday, ranging between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Phakula said the rain is likely to continue sporadically.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s latest statistics on September 20, the average water levels in the listed dams in Mpumalanga dropped from 79.1% to 78.2%.

On September 27, the department’s statistics reflected that the water level of the Blyderivier Dam dropped from 87.84% to 86.14%, Kwena dropped from 90.1% to 87.98%, Buffelskloof dropped from 79.64% to 75.93% and Witklip dropped from 90.73% to 88.93%. The Da Gama Dam also saw a decrease of 91.84% to 90.02% and Inyaka from 79.64% to 78.96%.
