Third day of inquest into Lily Mine collapse at Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court

On February 5, 2016, Yvonne Mnisi, Solomon Nyerende and Pretty Nkambule had been in an office container when the mine collapsed and they were trapped inside.

The inquest into the Lily Mine container collapse started on Tuesday in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court.

The bodies of the victims, Yvonne Mnisi, Solomon Nyerende and Pretty Nkambule, have not been recovered since the container fell into the sinkhole in 2016.

The provincial NPA spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the first witness, Mnisi’s father, Elmon, testified regarding what happened on the day of the incident on Wednesday.

On the same day an inspection in loco at Lily Mine was done by all role players in the matter i.e the presiding officer, assessors (mine experts), state prosecutors, family members with their legal representatives, investigating officers and others.

According to Nyuswa, as of Thursday, the court had heard eight witnesses made up of family and colleagues.

The matter is postponed until tomorrow, November 5, for further evidence.
