No further leads in 2019 murder case

Two years after her sister was murdered, the police still have no clue or leads regarding who were responsible.

Catherine (Cathy) Irving, then 54, was killed in her house on Plot 13 on the Uitkyk Road on December 7, 2019.

“I have put the whole matter behind me and put it to bed. I know they won’t catch the murderers,” Irving’s sister, Glenda, said this week.

At the time, Irving was the owner of Shamroc Cattery and Kennels. She was working outside in her garden when she was attacked by four suspects. They dragged her into the house, assaulted her and made her lie down on her bed after they tied her up. It is suspected that they were looking for money and firearms.

After they stole her firearm and cellphone, she was stabbed to death before the murderers fled.

Her body was discovered in a pool of blood in her bedroom by her gardener. He became suspicious when he saw four men running away from the house and went to investigate.  Glenda said the last time she had heard from the police or received any feedback about the murder, was about 18 months ago.

“I have really given up because I know they won’t be caught. I suspect they fled over the border after the slaying,” she said.

Albert Gryvenstein of Bossies Community Justice was at the time actively involved in the investigation.

“I have an idea who one of the suspects might be, but unfortunately there is no evidence,” said Gryvenstein. According to him, the greatest problem the police had had when they arrived at the murder scene, was that the whole scene had been contaminated by numerous residents and other curious onlookers who had visited the farm.

“The scene was so trampled and destroyed that the police had little chance of collecting proper evidence,” he said. Col Donald Mdhluli, a police spokesperson, said they still have not found any suspects and the case is still being investigated.
