A safer Mbombela with new Safe City app

Residents may soon be able to report service delivery issues and track their progress via a new app that also prioritises their safety from crime.

The Safe City app, supported by We Care 4 Nelspruit and the KLCBT, will allow users to report crimes and accidents as well as send location information and descriptions of people and vehicles possibly involved.

There are also plans to use the app as a comprehensive reporting system that will allow Mbombela locals to report broken street lights, potholes, water shortages, electricity outages and so on.

We Care 4 Nelspruit’s TJ Maré said the app has already been rolled out in other provinces and was doing wonders in the Free State.

The smart city solution was created by Hytera Integrated Command and Control Solutions, which presented the Safe City app to various stakeholders recently.

According to a statement by Hytera Southern Africa, residents of Mbombela will “soon be able to breathe easier regarding their safety, following the rolling out of the Safe City app.”

Hytera, in collaboration with local partner Altron Nexus, Contact Communications and Electra Communications met with members of the police, national parks, forestries like Sappy, York Timbers, as well as firefighting associations, local and provincial municipalities and game ranches.

“With our cutting-edge technology and a global team of professionals, Hytera provides a full range of innovative and intelligent communication solutions and enables users to improve connectivity and enhance situational awareness,” said the statement.

Maré emphasised that the app was not politically linked and was purely for the benefit and growth of the community.

KLCBT’s chairperson, Linda Grimbeek, said the organisation as well as Maré’s foundation would be supporting the app in terms of populating it with emergency and security contacts and information on certain areas, so travellers have on-hand details on any happenings in the area they are about to visit.

“We want to engage with the municipality next year and hope they come on board. It is a fantastic app and there will be more public representations made to the public in future,” she said.
