Traffic accommodation measures to improve flow at Karino Interchange

As the N4 gets busier in the festive season, special traffic accommodation measures have been taken to ensure the effective flow at the Karino Interchange.

With the arrival of one of the busiest times on the N4, special traffic accommodation measures have been taken to ensure the effective flow at the Karino Interchange.

TRAC advised motorists who use the section of the N4 Maputo Corridor over the next few weeks, to take note of the implemented accommodations to avoid confusion, and warned them to apply caution and vigilance when travelling through the area.

Eastbound traffic from Mbombela to Malalane approaching the R538 turn-off will make use of the current road alignment, which will become a one-way that opens into two free-flowing lanes.

Traffic on the R538 going to Malalane or Mbombela will be controlled by a two-way stop and will have to give way to mainline traffic. Temporary signage has been implemented to assist road users to move straight over the stop onto the new bridge towards Mbombela, or to turn left towards Malalane.

Westbound traffic from Malalane to Mbombela will be deviated to the newly built ramp towards the recently completed bridge. Traffic moving towards the R538 will have a dedicated right turn to cross the newly constructed bridge, followed by stop-controlled access to cross over the free-flowing eastbound traffic onto the R538.

A portion of the newly constructed ramp will be two-way traffic, to accommodate local traffic (permit holders only) and construction personnel. To further alleviate possible traffic congestion, pointsmen will be managing traffic on peak days throughout the holiday season.

TRAC urged motorists to be cautious and patient when travelling through the area, and further encouraged them to stay abreast of news about the route throughout the festive season, by following it on Twitter @TRACN4route, Facebook @TRACN4, or logging onto www.tracn4.co.za.
