SPCA prepares for onslaught of fireworks

As many know, and as the SPCA warns yearly, fireworks cause extreme stress and anxiety among animals.

The SPCA is already preparing itself for an onslaught of fireworks.

As many know, and as the SPCA warns yearly, fireworks cause extreme stress and anxiety among animals.

Lize Pienaar, the chairperson for the Nelspruit SPCA, said the noise not only affects domestic animals, but wildlife as well.

“Domestic animals get injured when they jump through windows, get stuck on palisades, jump over barbed wire fences or get run over by vehicles. Wildlife also try to flee and are run over by vehicles.

“Birds fly into buildings and other obstacles, and also abandon their nests, leaving young birds vulnerable to predators.”

Pienaar said the SPCA enforces the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962, “and we will act against members discharging fireworks that cause injuries to animals.

“However, we do not enforce municipal bylaws or the Explosives Act and we cannot act against people for selling or discharging fireworks; this is the mandate of the City of Mbombela and the SAPS.”

On New Year’s Eve the Nelspruit SPCA will be open to receive lost, scared and injured animals.

“We will also patrol the streets to look for animals that need help. However, we will need the public to assist us by bringing stray animals to the SPCA or to keep them safe until we can get there.
