MEC for health urges residents to be vigilant this festive season

SEKHUKHUNE – Once again, the MEC for health, Phophi Ramathuba, advised locals to be wary of contracting
or spreading Covid-19 during the festive period.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases, a division of the National Health Laboratory Services, confirmed that new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529, has been detected in South Africa and that numerous positive cases of this variant have since been recorded.

According to scientists, the new variant is always mutating. It spread across the country rapidly and is behind
the exponential increase in the recent Covid-19 infections cases.

The department partnered with certain malls across the province to set up pop-up vaccination sites, and equal private partners DisChem and Clicks will have their sites ready to assist people who need to receive
their jabs.

“As you do your shopping this festive, make sure you visit all of our pop-up sites for vaccination. Always
remember that vaccines are free.
“We understand the hype created towards Black Friday and the festive period. With the new Covid-19 variant
having been detected, we continue to urge our people to observe all the Covid-19 protocols at all times, and in particular during this busy festive period.

“Those yet to receive the vaccines must visit any of our sites to be vaccinated to avoid the spread of this virus. If we all can collectively comply with preventative measures, we can limit the spread of this new variant,” said Ramathuba.
