‘Twas the season for Lowveld babies

Of the more that 200 mothers that gave birth during the festive season, the oldest woman was 45.

Over 200 mothers across Mpumalanga received the gift of life this Christmas and new year.

On New Year’s Day alone, the province saw 206 births, 105 deliveries being within the Ehlanzeni District alone.

Of those 106 births, one was unfortunately declared a stillborn. Of all the babies, 60 were female and 45 male. Eighty-two of the deliveries were natural births.

Of those 106 births, 18 of the mothers are teens aged between 15 and 19. Within the province, 20% of mothers who gave birth were teens. The first mother to give birth was 25, and her bundle of joy was delivered in Shongwe Hospital.

The oldest woman to give birth was 45 and had her baby in Mapulaneng Hospital.

On Christmas Day, however, only 38 babies were born throughout the province. The first mother to give birth in Tonga Hospital was only 14, and the oldest woman to give birth, at age 42, delivered her baby in Tinstwalo Hospital.

Of the mothers to give birth, five were teens, four of them from the Ehlanzeni District.

Meanwhile, Mediclinic Nelspruit saw two new year babies being delivered. Kiaat Hospital also had two births on New Year’s Day.

Although Kiaat did not have any deliveries on Christmas Day, two babies were born on Christmas Eve.  Mediclinic, however, said two mothers gave birth on Christmas Day.
