Enos Mabuza to be completed later this year, says municipality

Upgrades to a section of Dr Enos Mabuza first started in February 2020 and were expected to be completed by October 2021, however, the City of Mbombela's spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, has said that certain issues have caused a few delays and the 18-month contract with White Hazy Construction has been extended by 136 days.

The upgrades to Dr Enos Mabuza Drive are set to be completed sometime this year, according to the City of Mbombela.

Upgrades to a section of Dr Enos Mabuza first started in February 2020 and were expected to be completed by October 2021, however, the City of Mbombela’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, has said that certain issues have caused a few delays and the 18-month contract with White Hazy Construction has been extended by 136 days.

White Hazy Construction’s Japie Visser said the delays included sensitive cables that needed to be moved on a section of road close to Westend SPAR before they could continue work on one of the lanes. They will continue with other construction until they have been moved.

Ngala added that cost of the upgrade was R79.8m and that there has been no overexpenditure on the project. It is still under budget, therefore no extra funds need to be allocated for the upgrade.

He said the cables were identified in the planning stage of the project and that they “are highly sensitive cables that need to be relocated by a specialist subcontractor”.

Visser said several other cables under the road had already been moved.

Ngala said that work on the Westend road section, traffic signalling, walkways and curbing, the road shoulders and the rehabilitation of the area still needs to be done.

He said the municipality is appealing to motorists to bear with it as some of the delays were unforeseen.
