Fotofinder helps with early detection

CANSA said it had back-to-back sessions on its latest screening day, amounting to a total of nine Fotofinder screenings. Four people showed abnormalities.

Following free Fotofinder screenings as well as skin examinations offered at CANSA Nelspruit at the end of January, four people were referred to a physician for further investigation.

A Fotofinder is a mole-mapping dermo-scope device for examining moles and spots. Ramphosi Shawe of CANSA said they had back-to-back sessions on the screening day, amounting to a total of nine Fotofinder screenings.

“Four people had abnormalities; they were females aged 54 and upwards.”

According to CANSA, warning signs for skin cancer include:

• Asymmetry – a mark with one half unlike the other. Common moles are round and symmetrical.
• Border irregularities – scalloped/poorly defined edges. Common moles are smooth and have even borders.
• Colour changes – tan, black, brown, red, white, blue. Common moles are usually a single shade of brown or black.
• Diameter – larger than six millimetres.
• Evolving – grows bigger and becomes more prominent.
