BHS athletes mean business

Hoërskool Barberton meant business at the all-important annual athletic challenge, the BUCO Interhigh, on Saturday February 26, and ended in fourth place among the seven participating schools.

The athletes raked in 22 medals for their excellent achievements seven gold, seven silver and eight bronze. Barberton’s athletes made an unforgettable impact on the track and some athletes were recognised for their field items.

Jerrel Mbambo.

Mbuso Thobejane won three gold medals for his unreachable results in the boys u/19 long-distance and middle-distance running. He ran the 3 000m race in only 09:08.84, the 1 500m in 04:17.70 and completed the 800m in a time of 02:00.57. He was announced the senior boys long-distance athlete of the day.

Sinenhlanhla Mnisi achieved two gold medals in the girls u/15 100m and 200m sprints, and a silver for the 300m hurdles. She ran the 100m in 13.49s, the 200m in 27.88s and the 300m hurdles in 50.54s.Vukani Ngwenya was awarded the title as the senior sprinter of the day for boys u/19 in the 400m race.

Akhona Godi.

He ran it in 48.24s, which earned him a gold medal. He also came in third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.86m.

Unathi Zulu.

Mbuso Thobejane (boys u/19) for 800m (02:00.57s), 1500m (04:17.70s) and 3000m (09:08.84s).

• Sinenhlanhla Mnisi (girls u/15) for 100m (13.49s) and 200m (27.88s).

• Vukani Ngwenya (boys u/19) for 400m (48.24s).

• Thando Nkosi (boys u/16) for highjump (1,65m).

Rhichan Heath.

• Babongile Mavuso (girls u/14) for javelin (24.58m).

• Shaun Msithini (boys u/15) for 1500m (04:50.12) and 800m (02:16.79s).

• Sinenhlanhla Mnisi (girls u/15) for 300m hurdles (50.54s).

• Jordan Erasmus (boys u/16) for highjump (1,65m).

• Sakitisi Mthunywa (girls u/19) for highjump (1,45m).

• Thandiwe Manyisa (girls u/19) for 200m (28.02s)

All the Barberton athletes that won bronze:

Zinhle Ndashe.

• Sibulelo Khanyisa (girls u/14) for 1500m (05:31.64).

• Karabo Ndwandwe (girls u/16) for 100m hurdles (18.83s) and long-jump (4,34m).

• Thandiwe Manyisa (girls u/19) for long-jump (4,74m).

• Siyabonga Vilanculos (boys u/17) for triple-jump (12,44m).

• Vukani Ngwenya (boys u/19) for triple-jump (12,86m).

• Wynand Ekkerd (boys u/14) for shotput (11,10m).

• Juandre de Beer (boys u/17) for discus (31,25m).
