Our Mbombela ready to change the City

A new initiative to make Mbombela beautiful again is under way and here to stay: Our City of Mbombela.
This community project is working to restore and maintain City spaces to keep it and its people safe from crime.
Like-minded individuals from across the Lowveld wanting to see positive changes in the City, gathered at the Capital Hotel on February 24 for the official launch.
An in-depth presentation on the new initiative and what it hopes to achieve was given by renowned Lowvelder Sandra Jacobs. The launch was attended by about 80 people from various businesses and organisations of the area.

“Our vision for this project is to inspire and lead a sustainable City clean-up plan that will create clean, well-maintained and safe public spaces for all citizens of the municipality.”
“There are problems in Mbombela. Our spaces are not monitored, crime is on the rise, businesses are suffering and we seem to have low morale. It is very easy to blame the local government and the municipality, but the true solution is that we, the community, have to get involved. We are responsible as a community for how our area looks – it is our house, and we need to keep it clean.”
The objective is to clean up, enhance, protect, and manage the City of Mbombela’s parks and green areas through initiatives and collaborations with organisations with a similar vision.
It also aims to foster community pride, build a sense of ownership, deter crime, create safe spaces, prevent antisocial behaviour such as vandalism and littering, and improve community perception and awareness of prevention programmes in public places.

The project was initiated by SPAR Lowveld, the KLCBT and Cecilia Architects, with We Care 4 Nelspruit, the City of Mbombela, The Power of 8000, and Riverside CID also getting onboard.
Some of these projects are already under way, such as the beautification of bus stops, creating spaces that are monitored by CCTV cameras, and fixing potholes.
The solution, according to the new initiative, is community involvement and being a responsible citizen. Lowvelder is also a proud media partner.
The project is calling on the community and local businesses to get involved by donating money, resources, equipment and manpower where needed.
