Head-on collision kills two and injures three on R38 outside Barberton

Two bakkies collided head-on on Friday morning, March 18. The cause of the incident is still being investigated.

Two people were killed and three children sustained injuries when two bakkies collided head-on on the R38, between Barberton and eManzana (formerly Badplaas) on Friday morning, March 18. ER24’s communications officer, Russel Meiring, said they had arrived at the scene at 09:05 and found the two wrecked vehicles in the middle of the road. “A man and woman were seen lying trapped inside one bakkie, two children were lying on the back of the vehicle, while another child was lying on the road a short distance away,” he said.

Medics assessed the situation and found that the man and woman had already succumbed to their numerous injuries – they were declared dead. Meanwhile, the two boys, believed to be 16, and a girl believed to be 11, were in a serious condition. “The children were treated and provided with pain relief medication before being transported to a private hospital for urgent care. The local authorities were on the scene to investigate the cause of the collision,” Meiring said.

Moeti Mmusi, the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, confirmed the accident and said the police were investigating the cause of the accident. “The road has been cleared, but we are pleading with motorists to drive cautiously to avoid accidents. Our officers are still on the scene,” he said.
