Peri-peri festival heats up the Lowveld

Attendees of the festival on March 13, were able to taste the various sauces from each stall, deciding for themselves which brand they found the hottest.

The Lowveld Peri-peri and Pepper Sauce Festival brought even more heat to the Lowveld on Sunday March 13.

Held at the Eagles View Play Park, the hottest festival around town hosted several stands of various local chili and peri-peri brands.  Attendees were able to taste the various sauces from each stall, deciding for themselves which brand they found the hottest.

A chili-eating competition was also held. The first prize, following the consumption of 20 chilies in one minute, was won by Mike Brueton, followed closely by Elret Steyn who managed 18 chilis in a minute.

The well-known caterer and owner of the guest house A Tua Casa, Elaine Blignaut, cooked up delectable prawns and Portuguese chicken for the attendees, while live music by local musicians brought some entertainment to the crowd.

The children were given free reins of the jumping castle set up on the grounds as well as the putt-putt grounds near the Eagles View Play Park Tee Time Coffee Shop seating area.

The event also hosted the SANBS, and various local companies competed to bring the largest number of people to donate blood.

BUCO Nelspruit claimed first prize with 24 blood donations, followed by Citybug Shuttle Service who had gathered 12 people to donate.

Mopani Pharmacy brought 10 people, Smartstone Nelspruit was responsible for nine donations and Pam Golding Nelspruit brought seven people. Eagles View Play Park accounted for six donations and Pygmy Digital managed three.

CANSA was also present to spray paint people’s hair in bright colours or shave their heads if the person felt brave enough. CANSA said it had over 70 people at its stall for donations, spraying hair and shaving heads.

The event started at 09:00 and while the stalls packed up by 15:00, the festivities continued until late afternoon.
