Masoyi police launch manhunt after 20 gunmen rob cash van

A group of 20 suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after a CIT heist.

The Masoyi police launched a manhunt for the suspectss of a cash-in-transit heist on Saturday March 19.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, said a group of armed suspects had made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.The incident occurred at around 07:50. Guards working for Fidelity Security Company were transporting cash on the R538 towards Dayizenza in Masoyi. A grey BMW collided with the vehicle, forcing it to a halt.

“After the collision, a hail of bullets was fired by the suspects at the guards. They descended on the cash van. There was an exchange of fire between the suspects and the guards, who were pulled out from their vehicle and held at gunpoint. The security guards were ordered to lie on the ground. The suspects detonated some explosives to force open the cash van, and off with an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Mohlala.

The criminals fled the scene in a maroon Toyota Corolla and a silver-grey VW Polo without number plates. The suspects are still at large. The police were alerted about the incident and a case of armed robbery is being investigated.

The police urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects, to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send information via the My SAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

Meanwhile, the provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, has ordered for the swift arrest of the suspects. “We believe that somebody has seen or heard something regarding the suspects and we plead with our communities to use our channels of communication to bring forth the details. Nonetheless, we are on the ground hunting for the suspects and we will make sure that they are soon brought to book.”
