Road works headache to continue for a few more months
April 29 is now the estimated completion date of road works in Voortrekker Street, Lydenburg.

The completion of the total refurbishment and reconstruction of Voortrekker Street has been delayed. The road is now scheduled to be finished by the end of April, at least two months after the original completion date.
At first, the project was scheduled to be completed at the end of January, but “unforeseen” circumstances delayed the process.

Themba Sibiya, media and marketing manager of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM), said that the base of Voortrekker Street is currently being compacted. This will be followed by priming, tact coating and asphalt application.
“The rainy weather caused disruptions while the base was being compacted. Protest action and technical challenges also led to disruptions. The team had to redesign the project because the road lime wasn’t stable. The contractor eventually managed to access lime after heavy rains delayed the lime production and delivery. The visualised completion date for the project is April 29,” said Sibiya.

The other part of road refurbishment in Lydenburg is taking part in Potgieter, Church and Viljoen streets, also known as the De Beer Street project.
Sibiya said the team has started to put the kerbs in place and that paving will follow soon.
“The completion date for the De Beer Street project is estimated to be May 31. Despite the delays experienced, the projects will be completed before the end of the current financial year,” said Sibiya.

TCLM commenced with the reconstruction project of Voortrekker Street on Tuesday September 7 last year. At the time Sibiya said that the construction project is long overdue.
After complaints from residents and business owners in January, Sibiya said, “We would like to apologise to the businesses located within the refurbished stretch of the road and the public in general for the inconvenience caused due to the delays.” TCLM has again asked for the patience of residents during the refurbishment project.
