Maintenance of Barberton Cemetery under way

The City of Mbombela municipality has said the water and sewage issues as well as safety concerns at the cemetery would be addressed.

Maintenance of the historical Barberton Cemetery is under way.

This is according to the City of Mbombela’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, following an outcry by the public over the state of the graveyard.

Lowvelder previously reported that a journalist had gone to the cemetery on March 11 to find some gravesites completely caked in dried sewage, while other graves could not even been seen due to the tall grass. There were also several broken headstones and large piles of litter and beer bottles throughout the historical site. Ngala said that due to the high rainfall over the past season, the graveyard has become overgrown.

He said the municipality has taken note of the ablution facility issues as well as the water and sewerage problems, and that these matters would be attended to.
“If any families do find their tombstones have been damaged, please report them to the cemetery offices at the municipality.”
