Marloth Park residents undergo alien plant education
Marloth Park's property owners were urged to send their gardeners and domestic workers to an alien plant training seminar at the Tin Shack on Monday April 4.
The seminar was run by the Marlothii Conservancy. It explained why invasive alien plants have been degrading the habitat of Marloth Park for uncountable years, and equipped participants with the crucial knowledge to identify and remove some of the worst species.
According to the conservancy, the seminar was attended by many who were curious about the various types of plants in the park that were deemed plagues. The most important information was translated into siSwati when necessary.

“Each hectare lost to invaders such as lantana and parthenium is valuable grazing denied to our native wildlife,” said the conservancy vice chair Murray Broad. “Eliminating invasive plants is very labour-intensive and we are in danger of losing this battle. So we made it our goal to inform the residents and workers of Marloth Park to educate themselves and take part to end the spread of this alien disease.”

By enlisting the help of the many gardeners and other staff who work in Marloth, the conservancy hopes to turn the tide and take control of the growth in the park.
