No leads in attempted hijacking case on Numbi Road as new cases pile up
A four-month-old case of attempted hijacking remains unsolved. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident in which a Pretoria family was attacked by armed men on the R538 between White River and the Kruger National Park's Numbi Gate.
Melani de Beer and her two children, Miah and Marnu, were the victims of two men who shot at their vehicle on the R538 near a taxi rank in Mganduzweni, between the Numbi Gate and White River on January 3, in an attempt to hijack their vehicle.
“We are still recovering from the trauma, financially and emotionally, as it is a slow progress,” said Melani. The family had enjoyed a holiday in the game reserve and were on their way home to Montana Park in Pretoria when the incident occurred.

De Beer and her children had to stay in Mbombela for a while as Miah was injured in the attack. She had sustained two gunshot wounds to her thigh, but is fully recovered after four months of care and treatment.
“I am still grateful to this day that we did not suffer a worse fate. It did not take me more than a few hours to warn people on social media about the dangerous road towards the Numbi Gate after we were attacked. Unfortunately, we still have not received any updates from the police, which is a concern, considering many more people are being targeted and will most likely end up in the same situation or worse,” Melani said.

The Masoyi police’s spokesperson, Nanikie Nonyane, confirmed that the search for these suspects was still in progress, and the cases of attempted murder and attempted car hijacking are still being investigated. The police said a large-scale manhunt has been initiated to apprehend the suspects, as more attacks on other drivers have occurred on the same road where the De Beers had been attacked.
