Lowvelders open their hearts to KwaZulu-Natal

The Nelspruit for KZN project received hundreds of donations from people across the Lowveld.

An eight-tonne truck filled with clothes, food and water donated by scores of Lowvelders left for KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday April 23 as part of the Nelspruit for KZN project.

Coordinated by the Lions Club’s Koos Schoonraad, the relief outreach garnered support from various schools, businesses and individuals across the community, all ready to help those affected by the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

Schoonraad said that local business 2Care4Water donated 5 000 litres of water. Thousands of items of clothing, from T-shirts to winter jackets, as well as blankets and foodstuffs were also donated.

The truck arrived at Sonpark Centre at about 15:30 on Saturday. Schoonraad and other volunteers of the Lions Club spent well over an hour to load all the donations into the truck, almost completely filling it.

Schoonraad said the main sponsors were the Lions Club, Sonpark Centre, 2Care4Water and Lowvelder.  Schools such as Lowveld High and Nelspruit Primary also donated scores of black plastic bags filled with clothes and food.

The truck will be dropping off the donated goods in KwaZulu-Natal this week, which will then be distributed to those who have been severely affected by the recent flooding in the area.
