Beloved teacher added inspiration to the classroom

Joan Van Tonder started her legacy at the school 18 years ago and was well loved by all who knew her, from teaching staff, to current and past learners of the school.

Remembered fondly for her passion and dedication for teaching, tributes have poured in for a late Hoërskool Bergvlam teacher, Joan van Tonder, following her death on May 5.

She had died as a result of a year-long battle with cancer, succumbing to the illness on the morning of May 5.  Hoërskool Bergvlam paid tribute to the beloved Van Tonder following the devastating news in a Facebook post.

The school said it was saddened by her loss. She was a wonderful teacher, friend, mother and grandmother. “Her journey began at Hoërskool Bergvlam on January 1, 2004,” said the school in its post.

“Her passion for teaching and her love of her subject, maths, inspired so many pupils to follow their dreams. Hoërskool Bergvlam mourns the loss of this irreplaceable legend.

“In your life, we loved you dearly, in death we love you still. You will always be remembered, no matter what. Your presence, love and kindness will forever be with us.

“We will miss you forever, like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky. In our hearts you hold a special place no one else will ever fill.”  Van Tonder was the head of the maths department and well loved by all her learners and colleagues.

She was just 63 at the time of her death.
