TCLM to clamp down on illegal dumpsites

Themba Sibiya, the TCLM’s media and marketing manager, said they are now going to clamp down if they see people dumping refuse illegally. So far, illegal dumpsites in Mashishing, Ext 6, parts of the access road to the Lydenburg landfill site, Berg and River streets have been cleared.

TCLM has also refurbished refuse containers and ordered new ones to be made available for the public throughout the municipality. The campaign will also cover other areas. TCLM has procured eight additional skip bins for residential and business use as a bid to discourage illegal dumping. The by-law enforcement officers conduct regular spotting of emerging illegal dumpsites so these can immediately be cleared.

Illegal dumping is defined as depositing, discharging, spilling, or releasing any kind of waste in or on any public space. This includes waste that is loose or in boxes, rubble or bags. Illegal dumpsites have serious effects on both public health and the environment Night-time disposal is prohibited. Waste must be disposed of between 07:00 and 17:00. The public is urged to report illegal dumping to the municipal offices or call 013 235 7300 or 1788. “Illegal dumping is a crime, a health hazard, and an ugly sight which we must work together to uproot and keep Thaba Chweu clean,” TCLM said.
