Hazyview police arrest two suspects for allegedly shooting security guard

The security guard was on duty at one of the schools in the area.

Hazyview police arrested two suspects, aged 23 and 29, after allegedly shooting a security guard on duty at a school in Sand River near Hazyview.
The incident occurred on Thursday February 2, however, the two were arrested at one of the taverns in Shabalala a day after the incident, on February 3.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said, the three armed suspects stormed into a high school in Sand River near Hazyview. They found a security guard on duty and attacked him.

“The suspects held him at gunpoint and demanded his firearm. When the guard informed his assailants that he was not in possession of a firearm, they shot him. Nothing was stolen from the school during this horrific incident,” he said.

 

Mohlala said the matter was reported to the authorities and the guard was later taken to hospital where he reported to be recovering.

The police in Hazyview began with an investigation of an attempted murder case and got a tip-off from some members of the community on the whereabouts of two of the three suspects.

“The astute members followed up on the information and the suspects attempted to shoot at the police during the time of their arrest. Fortunately the firearm jammed. Police responded and fired shots. Both suspects were shot and sustained wounds to their legs. Upon their arrest, a 9mm pistol and ten live rounds of ammunition were confiscated.

“The firearm’s serial number was filled off. The arrested suspects are currently under police guard in hospital and will soon appear in court. Police are still searching for the third suspect and hopefully an arrest will be made soon. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will conduct an investigation into the shooting of the two suspects,” said Mohlala.
