Two illegal miners arrested in Steelpoort

Equipment worth an estimated R40 000 was confiscated on-site, which included generators, rolls of electric cables, spades and jackhammers.

Two illegal immigrants will soon appear in the Burgersfort Magistrate’s Court on a charge of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act, following their arrest on Sunday.

The Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the police had followed up on a tip-off from the community regarding illegal mining at Mahlakwena Village outside Steelpoort involving a number of undocumented foreigners.

“A joint operation involving the provincial illegal mining task team
as well as the provincial organised crime unit led to the arrest of two suspects mining chrome at the site,” Ledwaba said.

He said that a number of other illegal miners had abandoned their equipment and evaded arrest by fleeing in different directions.

Equipment worth an estimated R40 000 was confiscated on-site, which included generators, rolls of electric cables, spades and jackhammers.
According to Ledwaba, investigations are still ongoing.
