Two senior managers suspended at SDM for alleged corruption

Seven other employees also allegedly received financial favours and job promotions from the two managers.

Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) has suspended two of its senior managers on allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement.

According to the Bolsheviks Party of South Africa (BPSA), one of the opposition parties at the SDM, the
officials had allegedly increased a salary of one of the SDM employees, who is allegedly in a relationship with one of the suspended managers.

Seven other employees also allegedly received financial favours and job promotions from the two managers.

“While we applaud the SDM for taking the first step towards fighting corruption in the municipality by suspending the two officials implicated in a web of financial mismanagement and maladministration. We also want to warn them that they must never think of sweeping this under the carpet or using political interference to
make this matter go away,” said Seun Mogotji, a BPSA councillor at the SDM.

“We understand that the rot goes deeper. The officials’ suspension is merely scraping the surface. They are not
working alone. We believe some of their friends still remain behind and will be working overtime in order to get rid of crucial evidence. We are watching every single one of them with a hawk’s eye.”

The BPSA’s Seun Mogotji intends to fight corruption at the SDM.

The BPSA said it will not hesitate to contact the police with evidence of wrongdoing by any official at the SDM.
Mogotji also confirmed that his party will open a case with the Limpopo Hawks against the officials.

“In the interest of the public, we want this money recovered and returned to the SDM’s coffers.”

SDM’s acting spokesperson, Maredi Kgetjepe, said, “The SDM confirms that it has suspended two of its managers. The municipality said it could not at this stage divulge the contents of the suspension letters or their identities.

“It will be procedurally unfair for the municipality to engage publicly on these allegations, against the prescripts of
labour laws.”
