Tennis Masters from all over SA take centre court in Mbombela

Seasoned players represented their respective provinces with pride and enthusiasm, on and off the court.

Some top-tier tennis took place last week as the city played host to this year’s Growthpoint Masters Interprovincial Tournament at the Nelspruit Tennis Club, Hoërskool Nelspruit and Panorama Tennis Club from May 15 to 19.

Tennis players between the ages of 55 and 75, from seven provinces, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West and Mpumalanga, competed.

Gauteng walked away as the overall winners of the tournament.

Mpumalanga 70A won silver in their age division, while the host’s 60A team bagged a third-place spot.

Together with their second-position finish, the 70A side also won the best team spirit award for their enthusiasm on and off
the court.

Team Mpumalanga were represented by the following experienced players:

(55A) Anso Thormahlen (c), Philly le Roux, Pieter Boshoff, Jacob van Zyl, Nettie Beetge and Susan Maritz.
(55B) Riekie du Preez (c), Norman Swart, Fred du Pont, Gordon Allison, Heloise de Bruin and Mariza Schoeman.
(60A) Sylvia Ottor (c), Karel Jacobs, Solly Dlamini, Peet Rabie, Quentin Otto and Ellica van Wyk.
(65A) Jan Tolmay (c), Danie Buys, Annemarie Allers, Brink, Ingrid van Rooyen.
(70A) Louise Minnaar (c), Dawie Visser, Nico Brink, Leon Pienaar, Annie Wierich and Sherry van Zyl.
