Barberton Golf Club has a new manager at the helm
Maintenance and new plans for the future of golf in this town are underway.
As of the beginning of May, a new manager was appointed to steer the Barberton Golf Club ship to success.
Wayne Gebhard (59) has been a keen golfer since 1977. He took over from Amelia Joubert and officially started his managerial duties on May 9.
“The position was available and as I am retired I decided to apply,” he said.

Gebhard added that for the last 10-plus years the previous managers had been non-golfers, which also influenced his decision to apply for the role as he himself enjoys a round of golf and knows the game and what it entails.
As for the transition from player to manager, he said he is still finding his feet, but he hopes to incorporate improved control systems at the club.
“My motto is ‘work smarter not harder’,” he said.
Gebhard has numerous plans for the new and improved club all of which include to make golf fun again. He also wants to attract more feet.
“I am busy getting sponsors for fun days on Friday afternoons and more sponsors for play on Wednesdays,” Gebhard told Lowvelder.

Since his appointment, there have been golf competition launches and specials offered to attract players, young and old.
He and his team are also busy with some maintenance, ensuring that golfers will have a pleasant experience when they take to the course.
“The greens are really in good condition,” he said, but added that there is still some work waiting for them and that they would appreciate any support they can get to help with the upkeep.
