Pienaar ward councillor arrested

After allegedly damaging property at a school, a Pienaar ward councillor was arrested recently.

A ward councillor in Pienaar was arrested on September 4 for allegedly damaging padlocks and doors at a secondary school in the area on August 27.

The councillor was identified as Mandla Siboza (41) during his appearance in the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court. On the day of his arrest he was with five other men. They went to the school at about 11:00 and allegedly demanded to use the hall.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, when he and the other men arrived at the school’s locked gate, he allegedly cut the padlock with a bolt cutter to gain entrance to the property.

“It is also alleged that he informed the security guard that he was authorised to utilise the hall at the school over weekends, claims which both the school’s principal and school governing body (SGB) disputed,” said Mdhluli.

He said Siboza and the other men proceeded to allegedly break open another padlock and four doors. The estimated damage is R8 000. A case of malicious damage to property was registered at the Pienaar SAPS. He was remanded in custody and the matter was postponed to Friday September 8 for a formal bail application.
