Suspects arrested after house is torched at Ga Motodi
Limpopo SAPS didn’t reveal when the suspects will appear in court.
Six suspects were arrested by the Tubatse SAPS on Tuesday morning. They are alleged to be suspects in the torching of a house belonging to Mochesto Makhubela.
Makhubela was allegedly assaulted by a mob and his house torched last Friday at Ga-Motodi (Stasie) outside Burgersfort.
According to a community member, who chose to remain anonymous, the locals gathered on September 7 after several deaths, allegedly due to poisoning, at Ga-Motodi.
“Makhubela was the main suspect during the meeting. The angry mob went to his house and beat him up, but he escaped. They then burnt down his two-room house.”
The source alleged there have been deaths due to poisoning in the village. “We have had incidents in which people were allegedly poisoned at local taverns and shebeens since the start of the year.”
The spokesperson for the Limpopo SAPS, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said investigations are still being conducted.
He didn’t reveal when the suspects will appear in court.
This is not the first mob justice incident in the village. In March 2021, Nthabeleng Sebopela was also attacked by a mob after being accused of stealing plasma TVs. Four men were arrested during the incident.
The former Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said, “We encourage members of the public to assist us in the fight against crime. They must always remember that suspects apprehended for any crimes should be surrendered to the police.
“Please desist from taking the law into your own hands, as those who choose to break the law and engage in mob justice will be arrested and dealt with effectively.”
