The safety-ambassador initiative, which is aimed on ensuring safety in the city’s CBD, increased their manpower from 70 to 90 members as of July 1. The 20 additional safety ambassadors have been deployed in the town’s hot spots.
After analysing the statistics received from the SAPS, it becomes clear that there are still incidents of theft out of motor vehicles, giving an indication of where additional safety ambassadors is needed.
All the new safety ambassadors have received in-service training last week and are now in their designated spots. They patrol the streets of the CBD on bicycles and stay in contact via hand radios to maintain proper communication among one another.
Other than keeping outlaws off the street, they are also responsible for keeping their area of duty clean and tidy.
They receive a stipend from Ehlanzeni District Municipality through the expanded public works programme. This is a very basic amount and if people are happy with the work that the safety ambassadors do, they are welcome to give them a little something extra. “Since this initiative was established, a clear improvement is visible in the city’s centre both on the criminal side as well as the cleaning up thereof,” says Mbombela central improvement district manager, Ms Rayhana Laher.
