South Africa makes world headlines after giraffe hits bridge while in transit

One of two giraffes die after hitting head against Garsfontein bridge.

PRETORIA – One of two giraffes being transported is reported to have hit its head on a bridge on the N1 highway on Thursday July 31, 2014. The incident is said to have occured at the Garsfontein bridge.

BBC News and other international media houses have now also reported on the accident.

According to Eyewitness News, South Africa’s animal rights body, the NSPCA is now investigating the death. An autopsy will now be conducted to determine the cause of death. The NSPCA confirmed that the giraffe had sustained a head injury.

“The vehicle apparently then broke down and had to wait several hours to be repaired, after which both animals were taken to a vet, “the article reads. According to the NSPCA, one giraffe died on arrival. They were en route to a game farm in Warmbaths.
