Millions in dagga seized near Mbombela, suspect out on bail

A man was arrested after he was found in possession of dagga worth more than R3m.

The Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court has granted Mfundo Manyike R5 000 bail, following his arrest relating to dagga possession. He was found with dagga worth R3.3m.

Manyike (32) appeared in court on Friday, September 12. The matter was postponed to October 14 for further investigation.

The police received a tip-off about a man suspected of transporting dagga in a white Mahindra bakkie. Members of the White River K9 Unit mobilised and arrested Manyike along the R40 near Mbombela at about 07:30 on Thursday, September 11.

The vehicle is said to have Gauteng number plates.

“Upon searching the vehicle, the police discovered 21 bales of dagga, weighing 548kg,” said the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli.

He said dagga remains a major challenge that keeps the police vigilant in Mpumalanga.
