10 public transport buses destroyed by fire in Barberton

Buscor has deployed replacement vehicles to minimise commuter disruptions.

10 Buscor buses were destroyed by a fire on the night of Tuesday, December 16. Forensic investigators are on site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the cause of the fire.

According to Buscor spokesperson Thomas Lubisi, the blaze originated from one of the buses before rapidly spreading to others parked nearby.

He confirmed that 10 buses were lost.

“We managed to save one bus that had already caught fire. The flames were extinguished before it was completely destroyed,” said Lubisi, adding that firefighters managed to contain the flames before they could spread any further, thereby preventing further vehicle damage.

“Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the scene.”

The MEC for public works, roads and transport in Mpumalanga, Thulasizwe Thomo, said he is relieved that, at this stage, no injuries or loss of life have been reported as a result of the incident.

He said the department is awaiting a full report from Buscor, including the preliminary findings on the cause of the fire, while relevant authorities conduct their investigations.

Thomo emphasised the importance of strict adherence to safety, fire prevention and risk management measures at all public transport facilities, including depots and yards.

“As we move through this peak season, it is critical that all public transport operators heighten safety standards, ensure regular inspections of facilities and vehicles, and have clear emergency response plans in place,” said Thomo.
