Truck driver shot dead in Bushbuckridge

A late-night stop along the R40 ended in tragedy when a truck driver was shot dead.

A truck driver was shot and killed near a mall in Bushbuckridge on Tuesday, January 6.

According to Bushbuckridge police spokesperson Sergeant Marylane Mmonwa, the driver of an Isuzu side-tipper truck allegedly stopped along the R40 at about 23:00 to relieve himself when an armed suspect approached him.

“The suspect shot the driver and searched him while he lay on the ground. He then entered the truck and searched the cabin, fleeing with some of the driver’s belongings. At this stage, we are not certain exactly what was taken, but the deceased’s phone and wallet were not found at the scene,” she said.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld until his next of kin have been formally notified.

He was reportedly from KwaZulu-Natal.

Mmonwa added that the SAPS has launched a manhunt for the suspect and is appealing to anyone with information that may lead to an arrest to come forward.
