R40 accident claims one life near Msholozi turn-off

A Mbombela resident lost his life in an accident on the R40.

One driver died and another sustained minor injuries in a collision involving a light delivery vehicle (LDV) and a sedan on the R40 near the Msholozi turn-off today (January 7).

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, the driver of the LDV was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The driver of the sedan escaped with minor injuries and was treated on site. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles at the time of the accident.

While the deceased is well known in the Mbombela community, his identity is being withheld until his next of kin have been formally notified.

“The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and an investigation is under way to determine the circumstances. Two lanes towards Mbombela are affected, but the road remains open. Motorists are advised to drive with caution when approaching the area, as emergency personnel are on site preparing for recovery,” Mmusi said.

He also urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly as the Lowveld is experiencing heavy rainfall, and reminded road users to adhere to the rules of the road.
