NELSPRUIT – September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. A total of 25 pupils from three schools dressed up as golden moving “statues” to raise awareness of this disease.
According to Ms Jacqueline Weideman the CANSA, 17 pupils of Penryn College participated in the event at I’langa Mall on Saturday morning. Eight from Hoërskool Nelspruit and Uplands College took part at Riverside Mall.
The “statues” dressed in yellow and wore golden hats. They took up various stances and stood very, very still, moving only to change position once in a while when a passerby dropped them some change.

According to Sr Rona Labuschagne who runs the care clinic for CANSA Lowveld, the idea was to raise awareness of the Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) initiative. The programme is aimed at children and teenagers who have either been diagnosed with cancer, or are being affected by the disease through a close relative suffering from it. Support is provided to the entire family in both scenarios.
Besides the money raised, there was also a sale to raise funds. At the time of going to print, the exact amount raised for TLC was not yet available.
