Angels start handing out Christmas gifts
The Guardian Angels have started blessing the region's elderly with an early Christmas.
NELSPRUIT – The first beneficiaries on their list was those from Zwelisha, This is one of their branches that assists 20 elderly in their community. Daantjie’s elderly also received gifts on Friday November 22. This is the culmination of the Guardian Angel’s Caring is Daring campaign for 2013. Managed by Helen Mbuyane, this elderly day centre was opened by Guardian Angels in April 2012. Many seniors visit here daily, and thanks to Operation Hunger many get lunch here.
Patrons of the centre are learning to read and write and enjoy a prayer morning on Thursdays.
With regard to Caring is Daring, Guardian Angels national coordinator, Marcel van Doorn says,“What makes this campaign unique is that it allows both businesses and individuals to make donations, therefore it is not only large companies that can make a difference to these people who are in such need of it.” From clothes, socks and hand cream to TVs and toasters or just a friendly visit, the elderly indicated what they would most like to receive this festive season.
“We want to thank The Grove SUPERSPAR for the cake and Southern Sun Emnotweni for the gifts of this week,” says Van Doorn.
Challenges we face at the moment is a lack of volunteers in the area, as volunteers are not remunerated. So our numbers dropped in one year from 25 volunteers to 3.
Another challenge is lack of water. Toilets are not running and we also can’t continue with our veggie garden. All branches always need volunteers and we urge members of the public who have a passion for senior citizens to join Guardian Angels.
