Spin City draws a big crowd

Sibiya said that the event was indeed a huge success with eager spectators from all over town coming together to enjoy the exhilaration of spinning cars. “There were more or less 1100 spectators. It was truly a rainbow nation event. The sport is safe and children enjoyed the spinning tremendously.”

LYDENBURG – Monate Events and Mash Crew Spinners had the tyres screeching this past weekend.

This event was held to develop and implement a campaign that will aim to raise awareness on the effects of crime and drug abuse.

Spin city events are popular in townships throughout South Africa and have also gained local support in the Mashishing community.

According to Comfort Sibiya, one of the organisers of the event entertainment is the language of the youth. “Instead of lectured, the organisers are just to deploy posters, flyers and T-shirts with catchy illustrations and text. The idea is to convey messages through fewer words and relevant, eye-catching images. Young people do not show much interest in lectures, hence the organisers decided to come up with a new and fresh approach of creating social awareness.”

It was truly a rainbow nation event. The sport is safe and children enjoyed the spinning tremendously.”

He also said that the crew were now facing a slight crisis that could jeopardise possible future events. “The previous leasers of the area on which the spinning took place, let the lease of the property lapse. We would like to take over the lease to ensure that this sport gets supported. We now need the help of the municipality, the land use committee and councillors to keep this sport alive and well. It gives the people of Lydenburg some entertainment.”

The event also included, among others, a music and dance festival, spinning and drifting arena, car dealership stalls and a go-carting track.

“Monate Events believes the potential exists for this event to attain regional and national profile as an original, creative and performing motor sports event. The opportunity now exists for sponsors to lift this event into a widely popular and established part of the regional event calendar. We would be delighted to work with sponsors and realise the events full publicity potential,” Sibiya explains.
