On Saturday, the DA went all out to make Women’s Day something to remember for a few very lucky ladies. Planned by Cllr Elsabé Jacobs, the day was filled with creativity.

From early on, the ladies arrived at Artbizz, the studio of artist Retha Olivier. It was kicked off with dainty sandwiches and coffee, after which Jacobs gave a short speech on what it is to be a woman.

“There are so many different aspects to it, but today we will focus on our creative side. I’m not creative at all; I’m what you might call forced creative. My sister was the one on the receiving end of these genes, but it’s nice to be able to sit down and learn new skills.”

Jacobs made sure the women understood that above all, the day was about having fun, and that it was indeed.

First off, Olivier gave a class on how to decoupage with serviettes. After receiving wooden trays and paint, the fun started. Only having to do the first layer, some of the ladies took the opportunity to paint faces, words, make polka dots and use brightly coloured stripes to make the backdrop more interesting.

While the paint was drying, Elline Cockburn of Bake-My-Day, gave a class on various techniques of icing cupcakes. This was a lot of fun as the women were taught how to make everything from a rose to characters from Frozen and Angry Birds. They then tried their hand at the icing themselves and came up with wonderful, and even hilarious results.

Lunch was lasagne made by Jacobs and cupcakes, baked by Cockburn and decorated by the women with edible DA logos. After a short recess, it was back to Olivier and the decoupage class.

These three can be justly proud of themselves. After the day came to an end, just before 16:30 the women were quite exhausted, but had learned new skills and took home their beautiful trays and cupcakes. Thanks to the DA, Saturday was truly a celebration of womanhood.
