Two suspects are on the loose after allegedly breaking into a cellphone tower.

Officers of Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit said they discovered 24 special batteries on the scene which they believe were left behind when the suspects fled.

The security company had originally received a tip-off from a client who said that two suspicious-looking men were moving boxes from the MTN and Vodacom cellular tower next to her home.

Mr Nico Grobler, operational manager of Hi-Tech, said officers were dispatched and upon arrival discovered the batteries. Capt Dawie Pretorious, spokesman for the SAPS, said a case of housebreaking is being investigated.
