TONGA – A 43-year-old man appeared in the Nkomazi Magstrate’s Court on September 12 on charges of raping his 12-year-old daughter and 17-year-old niece.
His formal bail application was postponed to September 17.
According to Lt Mzwandile Nyambi SAPS spokesman, the arrest came after the victim, who is now pregnant as a result of the rape, informed her sister that it was the result of the rape by her uncle.
The victim also mentioned that her 12-year-old cousin who was the daughter of the suspect, had also been raped by him. Nyambi said, “It is alleged that the uncle started raping the young girls in December last year and he continued with his evil ways until the 17-year-old became pregnant. When the girl informed him that she was pregnant he offered her some money to get rid of the pregnancy but she refused to do so.”
According to Nyambi the sister then reported the matter to the police and a case of rape was opened. The suspect was arrested and appeared in court, and the case has been remanded to September 17 for formal bail application.
“Police are arranging with the department of social development to move the victims to a place of safety. We appeal to all men to refrain from raping children,” he said.
