Care Buddies treat our senior citizens to a lovely day out

he aim of the Care Buddies is to provide love, support and emotional care to the aged in our communities and it endeavours to make the elderly feel secure and valued.

MBOMBELA – Close to 200 silver seniors from local old-age homes as well as private residences were treated to a fun day at the Lowveld National Botanical Garden’s tea garden on Tuesday. The aim of the Care Buddies is to provide love, support and emotional care to the aged in our communities and it endeavours to make the elderly feel secure and valued.

With this in mind the White River and Mbombela branches of the Care Buddies joined forces to host an outing for the elderly residents in both towns.

Walkers, wheelchairs, canes, walking sticks and a helpful Care Buddy arm or two were all used to get the elderly to and from their allocated transport to the function. The guests were taken to the botanical garden in their masses by any means necessary.

Vocal and sing-a-long entertainment was provided by local buddies Santi Erasmus and Liz McQueen. The pensioners enjoyed the outing tremendously and quickly joined in the singing with clapping of hands and tapping of feet. Guests were spoiled and each received a snugly fleece knee blanket to take home.

Tea and scones were served as well as soft-serve ice cream. The weather was a blessing and what a privilege to see how such a simple outing, along with some treats, and even the excitement about a picture in the newspaper, could brighten the day of the elderly in our communities.

The excitement was tangible when the announcement was made that next year, they would be treated again. For more information on the Care Buddies, contact Amanda Brugman on 082-339-6465.
