MBOMBELA – Mpumalanga Heritage is enjoying a busy year of historical discovery. After an exciting weekend in February, discovering the Jock of The Bushveld route from Lydenburg to Old Pesene in Mozambique, next up is Pettigrews Road along the Kaap River from Barberton to Kaapmuiden.
This expedition will take place on Saturday May 14, leaving Sonpark at 07:00 for an audio-visual presentation at 08:00 at Barberton Museum, before the actual excursion. Some 70 members recently went on a historical town visit to Machadodorp.

On Saturday May 21 all interested in the history of Hazyview and its surrounds will meet at The Numbi Hotel to discuss a history project and the publication of a book on the area.
Mpumalanga Heritage is also involved in the planning of the first Lowveld Book Festival in August this year. Some new historical publications will be launched and a gala evening will be held to honour some champions of historical conservation in the region.
After the successful three-day excursion, following the old transport route to Delagoa Bay on the trail of Jock of the Bushveld, it’s off to Machadodorp next weekend. Here the local town historians will take the group on a tour and experts on the Anglo-Boer War will show the group some significant sites.
Another excursion already confirmed is on June 11, a visit to Carolina and Lothair on the Highveld, where South Africa’s finest private collection of old farm machinery, tractors and cars will be seen.
