Teacher to head to France for scholarship

A young teacher and scientist is heading to France next week, after winning a two-year scholarship to go study sustainable management of pollution.

MBUZINI –  Emanuel Phesheya (24), is a life-sciences teacher at Nindane School and passionate about making a change in his community.

He heard about the Embassy of France Master scholarship programme from a friend and then found out more via the Internet.

Phesheya was admitted to the two-year Master’s Degree in Sustainable Management of Pollution at Lille Catholic University in Northern France, with the semester starting on September 1.

He was born and raised in Mbuzini, “an area well-known for the Samora Machel Monument, good values and respect under King Mlambo II”.

Phesheya obtained a B.Ed in Natural Sciences at the University of Pretoria in 2013, in record time and with 23 distinctions. He also received a Golden Key International Honour certificate in 2013, an award only given to outstanding students.

“ As a young scientist I became challenged by the needs of my community and country, especially in the teaching fraternity. I decided to become a teacher so that I would bring good changes in my community and enlighten the importance of education to young people,” he stated.

His family is very proud of him and his learners are inspired by his hard work. He did not let his poor background stand in the way of a bright future.

He was nicknamed “Phesheya”, which means “overseas” and he is very happy to be living up to his name.

During his first year in France he’ll be doing theory and field work in European countries and the second year he’ll be taking part in internships at European companies.

“I’ve always wanted to study abroad, so this is a dream come true,” he said excitedly.

“I’m very interested in connecting with students from all over the world and sharing innovative ideas on how to bring good changes that will conserve nature and use the environment and natural resources effectively and efficiently.”

The scholarship includes visa fees, full medical and social insurance, tuition fees, a monthly stipend and a return air ticket.

Although most of his costs are covered, he asks the community to support him by donating a laptop or tablet, which will help him in his studies and lessen his financial burden.

Phesheya would like to thank his colleagues, lecturers, friends and role models such as Mrs LT Shungube and Ndindane principal VL Thabethe for their support.

To help Phesheya, contact him on 079-824-1547 or send an email to overseas.shungube0@gmail.com.
