Unruly crowd gathers for wife accused of murder at court

Protesters shouted that the accused should not to receive bail

WHITE RIVER – Protesters caused an uproar outside court as Ms Ethel Mdluli and her two co-accused appeared for bail application yesterday. Magistrate Ms Winnie Baloyi had to ask police to quieten the protesters outside.

Mdluli appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder alongside her co-accused,  Mr Peter Khoza (52), who police say was her boyfriend, and Mr Xolani Mngwenya (34) who was the alleged hit man.  Mdluli, Khoza and Mngwenya were arrested last Thursday for the murder of  Mr Solomon Mdluli (57) on January 23. The principal of Mahlatse Secondary School in Nkomazi was believed to have been strangled and suffocated with a black plastic bag.

A TV, an aircon unit and his car was stolen. The vehicle was later found abandoned in KaNyamazane. His wife claimed she had been tied up by a suspect with a balaclava. The victim’s elder brother, Mr Mzulu Caiphus Mdluli, told Lowvelder he was murdered shortly after being discharged from hospital for an unknown illness.

As with their first appearance last Monday, protesters yesterday shouted that the accused should not to receive bail and banged on the fence loudly. Police managed to subdue the crowd and the matter proceeded.

Baloyi postponed the matter until Friday, due to uncertainty about which council would be defending Mngwenya.
