KaMajika jumps for joy when lights come on
The residents of KaMajika near Hazyview recently had a life-changing experience when their electricity was switched on.

When Eskom began the electrification project on November 7 last year, KaMajika had illegal connections which were life threatening to the community.
About 122 households flicked their electricity switches from the comfort and convenience of their homes for the first time on March 31. The residents alleged that people had in the past demanded bribes from them to remain connected.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms Esnath Mdluli, said that Eskom has changed their lives by taking over the provision of electricity from the hands of Izinyoka who always threatened to cut off their power, and often used intimidation to force them to pay. Other residents said the provision of electricity would also assist in curbing crime in the area.
“Eskom is proud to have electrified the area and wishes to encourage the residents to respect electricity by not tampering with the meters and other structures.
“They are also encouraged to avoid purchasing electricity from ‘ghost’ vendors, as there is no such thing as cheap electricity,” said Mr Eric Khoza, Eskom spokesman.
Those who are unsure of where to purchase electricity coupons can either visit their nearest Eskom office (Hazyview Hub) or contact the Eskom Contact Centre on 086-003-7566.
