UPDATE: Family shares their nightmare ordeal
"One of them tried to take my 4-year-old daughter, but I continued to fight back."
A family of five escaped unscathed after they fought back during an attempted house robbery last night.
According to Mr Albert Gryvenstein of Bossies Community Justice (BCJ), who went to the scene along with J&M Security and the SAPS, the Burger family was attacked by two armed suspects. “The suspects barged into our home just as my husband Nokkie got home,” Jolande Burger told White River Post.
“They tied up my husband in the living room while they held me and my daughter up in another,” she said.
“One suspect allegedly asked the other to hand him cable ties in order to tie me up. He declined and approached me to do it himself,” she said.
While they left Nokkie unattended, he managed to break loose and headed towards the bedroom to fetch a shotgun.
A suspect repeatedly tried to hit Jolande over the head with a pistol, but she blocked it. “One of them tried to take my four year old daughter, but I continued to fight back,” she said.
As soon as they heard Nokkie had loaded the shotgun, they made a run for it. “While one turned to run, I attempted to stab him with a screwdriver, but only managed to graze him,” she said.
BCJ’s Danie Theron followed the the tracks allegedly belonging to the suspects, which led to Dwaleni, but they lost the tracks inbetween the houses.
No suspects have been arrested. More information will be published as soon as it becomes available.
White River Post have in the meanwhile spoken to the family, who pointed out some inaccuracies in the previous report. We regret these errors and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
